Our Purpose
Chintan International Trust-India
Chintan International Trust-India is a humanitarian charitable organisation registered in India, helping holistic health development in Himalaya & other areas. Our health program works through linking modern education, research and training to sustainable development in the environmental, social and cultural context of the needy developing areas of the world.
Experience Chintan
One of the most satisfying and thrilling moment was when Diwan
conveyed in the middle of the night that they have reached Bangapani together with the huge pipes and then when he shared how they have managed to make them (each weighing one ton!!!) literally swim, to the other side of the Gori river, en route to their destination.
It was a wonderful coming together of Traditional wisdom, knowledge, skill and modern scientific advancements to see this project through.
It has certainly reduced drudgery of women in particular who had to move several kms to get their grains grind. And now we have moved from water surplus area to water scarce area and with traditional knowledge on ample display...... Quiti happens to be an acute water scarce area, with water tanks coming from Almora quite a few times to deliver water during the summer months. Rainwater harvesting can address the water related problem in a big way as shared by people. Another very humble experience was about knowing Kalawati, one of our women leaders, readily and eagerly donating her small land to gram panchayat to be used for community seed bank. This is despite her owning just 2.50 nalis of land.
Why Women
70% of the 1.1 billion people in the world who live in poverty (an income lower than US$ 1 a day) are women; Only 14% of the members of parliament in the world are women; 2/3 of all illiterate persons in the world are women; each year more than half a million women die in connection with pregnancy and childbirth on account of unnecessary complications; at least one in three women and girls falls victim to violence and sexual abuse; more than 60 million women are missing persons as a result of sex- selective abortions and female infanticide, particularly in South Asia and China; in Africa, women receive less than 10% of the total credit available for small farmers; fewer than 10% of the women farmers in India, Nepal and Thailand own their own land; on average, women in developing countries are paid 30 to 40% less than men for the same work.

She is an illiterate but highly educated and intelligent woman. A woman with real leadership qualities and is an inspiration for everyone. She is a single woman. Her husband died last year after a long illness.
She has been working for the past 30 years saving seeds, protecting community forests through her sheer grit, determination and courage.
Despite facing lot of challenges, she has not left cultivating her traditional crops and varieties and has played an integral role in creating the first traditional seed bank in her area.
